Oh, the horror!
Is it just me or have horror movies been multiplying at an alarming rate?
I rent almost weekly from my local Blockbuster and, I swear, every other movie on the shelf is a horror movie. Usually the covers are done pretty well—creepy, gory, dark images, they give me the creeps just looking at them. But I doubt half of those movies are any good. Not that I can really tell you when a horror movie is good.
I mean, what do you define as ‘good’ when you are talking about a horror film? Suspense? Gore? The screams? The story? Oh yes, I think it’s the story for me. A few months ago I got to watch an advanced screening of Silent Hill. I’ve never played the video game, but I thought the story was very interesting, and disturbing in such way that it made me think a lot afterwards about the how and the why the characters in the film behaved the way they did; how hatred, intolerance and ignorance can change people.
Beyond that, I don’t understand people’s fascination with horror. I know that lots of books have been written about this topic—perhaps one day I’ll pick one up and see if I can figure it out.
