Back in business.

1

After several failed attempts and a lot of procrastination, I have finally put my website/blog back online. I tried a few concepts for the overall look and feel over the past year, and eventually decided to keep it simple. I do hope to update this site more often this time around. I have also put a small portfolio section up, to showcase just some of my work.

As a sidenote, I just upgraded to WordPress 2.5, and I’m enjoying the improvements throughout the admin interface.

Four-Oh-Four Error!

Four oh Four errorThis is a hilarious customized 404 error page I just found. I came across it from cartoonist Tony Millionaire’s website, which I visited after seeing this. Quite the piece of art. In fact, Pressure Printing seems to have a good number of collectible art treasures currently in stock. I have got my eye on the Tony Millionaire and Glenn Barr pieces.

Very interesting is the Process section, which outlines how the prints are made. Truly amazing.

Thoughts and observations…

  • Wordpress rocks! I really like the new Post Preview and Upload features. I even use Wordpress’ own styling for the administrator area now instead of Steve Smith’s WP Tiget Admin theme that I used before Wordpress 2.0.
  • Wait in line at your school’s food court right when they are running out of the pasta, and when the portion left is too small to justify paying for it the cook might just offer to give it to you free of charge. You may also get a breadstick if you ask nicely. And there you have it, free lunch!
  • Want to add a different twist to your parties besides the same old drinking games? Invite all your Asian friends and they are bound to teach your guests some new games. There’s no drinking involved, but they are so much fun!
  • Oh, Borders, why do I love thee? Let me count the reasons… The great coffee, the best cheese pretzel I’ve ever had (and I thought I didn’t even like pretzels), the refreshing smell of paper, the relaxing music, the good customer service, the most welcoming atmosphere. I hear Barnes & Noble across the street from my closest Borders store is not doing so hot right now. Well, no surprise there.
  • When you plan to begin reading your Harry Potter books the tenth time over, try the audiobooks for a change. They are really worth it.
  • What do most art/design students do during a boring night class to pass time? They doodle.

Oh, happy day!

To my great pleasure and honor, two CSS gallery sites have very recently featured my webite on their pages. I was informed by email the other day of my blog being featured on CSS-MANIA, and just today I almost had a heart attack when I saw my website on CSS Thesis.

As a student, getting this kind of recognition is very important and encouraging, so thanks to those who have supported me, adviced me, voted for me, and thought of my website worthy of inclusion in the above websites. It’s really something else to see your humble effort of a website featured alongside the likes of clear:left (great site, by the way).

In other (relevant) news, the CSS Thesis folks have created gallerize, “a simple concept that grabs the latest gallery entries from various CSS galleries using their RSS feeds.” Very neat.

UPDATE (09/24/05): I made it on screenspire and Design Shack too, yay!

My very own blog

I finally decided to get my own blog as part of my new personal website. Hopefully I will keep updating it at a normal pace.

This is the first blog publishing platform I have used, and I made the decision to go with WordPress, because it is free, seems to be popular with the web design community, and it respects the web standards. So far I am very pleased with the amount of control I have over how my blog looks and functions. I am glad I have used an existing and tried platform instead of creating my own, which would have been time consuming and potentially flawed as far as security is concerned, becauce even though I am fairly comfortable with writing PHP I am definitely not an expert. I am especially impressed with how easy it was to customize the existing Wordpress template files to integrate my blog within the original design of my website. A special note of thanks to Jonathan Wold for pointing me in the right direction.
